"Der Chronist" by Marcus Welsch
The film follows Wilhelm Waibel, who uncovered the suppressed history of deported, mostly Eastern European forced laborers in his southern German hometown of Singen. In addition to this persistent and precise research work, he also did something extraordinary: after the fall of the Iron Curtain, he traveled to Ukraine to meet some of the people and ask them about their fates. In his major doc-film project, filmmaker Markus Welsch, who previously worked on films like "Goodbye Lenin", shows what a single person can achieve and how difficult and controversial it is to come to terms with injustice in one's own country.
